Copy with the bookplate of Lady Evelyn. 'Phillip was given the task of founding a convict settlement in Australia, and became the first governor of New South Wales. Reaching Botany Bay in 1788, via Tenerife, Rio de Janeiro, and the Cape of Good Hope, Phillip decided that the site was unsatisfactory and sailed to Port Jackson, where he founded the city named Sydney, after Thomas Townshend, Viscount Sydney, secretary of state.' (Hill). It is based mainly on Phillip's earliest report to the Government on the Colony, and the reports of other members of the First Fleet. The actual compiler is not known, but he must have had access to the official documents as it is a very accurate account. The present work is the basic source book and the first in order of importance for the history of Australia and no collection can be complete without a copy. EUR 4250

A Paris, Chez Pougin, An 3 de la République, (1795, vieux style). 2 parts in 1 volume. xii, 206, (2), 256 (4) pp. 8vo. Contemporary calf with gilt ornamental border on sides, spine gilt (some minor imperfections). Sabin 103406; Ferguson 231; Berger, Bibliografie do Rio de Janeiro, p. 312; Borba de Moraes, ii, p. 376; Hill, i, p. 324; JFBL W137; Chadenat 5155. First French edition of travel account to New South Wales, Botany Bay and Port Jackson, and also an account of the first settlement in Australia. White was appointed surgeon general to the settlement of New South Wales, and he sailed to Australia in 1787 with the convicts transports which sailed with the Sirius. The long appendix is very important as it describes the natural history of the new colony; the first major work of this sort (Hill). Some reference works list the presence of two plates (Ferguson & Sabin) but none of the other reference works refers to the presence of plates. The second French edition (1798) has two plates. Possibly there were two issues in 1795, one with, and one without the plates, copies with the two plates are very scarce. The plates may also be a later insertion which explains why so few copies have the plates. EUR 900
