The 'Coup d'oeil sur l'état politique du Brésil' was written on the instructions of the Portugese Ambassador in London by Joaquim Ferreira de Freitas and attacked the imperial Brazilian government and is at the same time a reply to a book written by La Beaumelle at the request of the Brazilian government. The present pamphlet by Beauchamp is a refutation of De Freitas' Coup d'oeil. De Beauchamp had published in june of the same year a work entitled L'Indépendence de l'empire du Brésil, .... for which Beauchamp was paid by the Brazilian representative in France, Gameiro, and in which book Beauchamp presented Brazilian independence in a favourable light to influence public opinion. Antoine Joseph Poncet S.J., dated 'de l'Isle de la Martinique en Amérique méridionale le 18 Juin 1675'. 4 pp. Folio, tear in inner fold. Antoine Joseph Poncet was born in Paris in 1610. He entered the Jesuit order in 1639, taught in Orléans and later in Canada, where he was tortured in a very cruel way by Iroquois. First Brazilian edition of the commercial code between France and Brazil. As printing in Brazil was suppressed by the Portuguese until the throne was transferred there in 1808, this is one of the earliest Brazilian imprints. Pedro I became Brazilian emperor in 1822 after leading a succesful revolution. His name is linked indissolubly with national independence; he gave independant Brazil a monarchial form of government and thus assured the unity of the country. His constitution of 1824 remained the fundamental law until the republic. Although essentially liberal, it gave much power to the emperor and most of his reign was marked by absolutism in government.
