The creation of the Paris École des Mines is Sage's major claim to distinction. He was a member of the Académie des Sciences and was in opposition to the new chemistry as was put forward by the famous Nomenclature chimique, published in 1787, with the sanction of the Academy of Sciences by Guyton de Morveau, Lavoisier, Berthollet, and Fourcroy. He was considered by contemporaries as a successful teacher, but recent chemical mineralogy has little to say on Sage's behalf (See Dictionary of Scientific Biography, xii, pp. 63-68). EUR 150

The work has also been attributed to Etienne Pesselier. Interesting treatise on education and the various skills it should develop. Published in the year which also saw the publication of Emile, the work was the object of various discussions. Important parts on education and combatting illiteracy among the children in the country-side.The book opens with the Lettre du Comte de *** à l'Auteur, servant de Préface & d'Introduction where we can read: 'Et premierement vous me permettrez de vous dire que cette matiere n'est point du tout étrange aux objets qui vous occupent le plus; ce n'est point un écrit de littérature agréable & frivole; c'est un ouvrage de Morale & de Politique, & qui tient de fort près à toutes les branches d'administration' (pp. iii-iv). These texts were first published as a small book in 8vo. It was ordered that these texts be published in "placards" (posters) and shipped to the municipalities, the armies, the popular societies, schools, etc. etc. The texts aimed at educating the youth, and were presented to the Convention Nationale on behalf of the 'Comité d'Instruction publique'. On the dangers of religious education, by the later minister of police under Napoléon. Joseph Fouché's publications of this period are all extremely rare...Joseph Fouché became a diplomatic agent for the Directory in the Netherlands and Italy. In 1799 he became minister of general police, an office he proceeded to vitalize. Having assisted, if in a passive role, in the Brumaire coup (he neglected to inform the republican directors of the plot of Bonaparte and the abbé Sieyès), he was retained as minister of general police by Bonaparte. Under Bonaparte Fouché created the first modern political police. Using ideas, techniques, and personnel from the ancien régime and the Revolution, Fouché was an effective and feared policeman. Italian economist, jurist and statesman. Rossi was a multi-national and a multi-talent. Expelled from his homeland for his zealous support of Italian unification, he emigrated to Switzerland, where he taught Roman history, championed constitutional reform, and became a naturalized citizen. After a major setback in his reform efforts he moved to France, and began lecturing on economics in 1827. In 1833 he succeeded J.B. Say in the chair of political economy at the Collège de France, winning the appointment over strong competition from Say's son-in-law, Charles Comte. Rossi offers a striking example of an international career in the nineteenth century, inspired by the ideas of the great revolution. In politics as in his scientific works Rossi followed the golden mean: he was a skilful diplomat, an ardent defender of reforms but an opponent of any sort of extremist innovation. In his juridical works as well as in his writings on political economy it was not so much the novelty of his theories as the art of evaluating those best known in his time which gave his works a didactic value quite considerable for the period. Continuing and commenting upon the authors of classical political economy, he was eclectic likewise in his method and may be considered as the precursor of the historical school (L. Ledermann in ESS, vol. 13, pp.439-440). EUR 300

Thibaudeau, councillor of state and prefect under Napoleon. A terrorist and regicide in the Convention. Thibaudeau remained an ardent republican in the Council of Five Hundred of the Directory but supported the coup d'état of 18 Brumaire. In March 1800 Bonaparte appointed him prefect of the Gironde but recalled him to Paris to serve in the Council of State in September 1800. His memoirs are among the most valuable of the period.
