L'ATELIER. Organe spécial de la classe ouvrière rédigé par des ouvriers exclusivement. Paris, 1840-1850 (Paris, EDHIS, 1978). Three volumes. 4to. Cloth. Important workers' newspaper appearing monthly from September 1840 to July 1850. It was edited by about seventy-five skilled workers, including twenty-six printing workers, and its articles were written by a collective of printers, hat makers, jewelers, and other skilled workers. L'Atelier is of central importance as a mouthpiece of workers' demands for state-financed producers' cooperatives and associations and for its class analysis of relations of production and surplus labour. However, it stressed its hostility to violence, expropriation, and collectivist or "communist" solutions. It was consistently democratic and called for political solutions to workers' grievances. The editors were in contact with English workers and Italian refugees in London and corresponded with the Chartists. The editor of this reprint, Maurice Agulhon, considers the 1840's as a turningpoint in the revolutionary movement. 'The prestige of streetbattles and secret societies has dropped. The workman is now reading, writing and starts to organize himself. They are now becoming selfconfident autonomic power.' Since then this attitude is specifically called 'Socialism'. L'Atelier wished to be a leading cultural and political journal. It was edited and written by men who lived at the heart of militant Paris. The journal reflects all aspects of this life, and offers the scholar opinions and information of a remarkable objective nature and sometimes of a thrilling subjective nature. Complete copies of the original imprint hardly exist anymore. They have rarely been on the market and have always been offered in incomplete state. The Union List of Serials lists 3 sets only, two of which appear to be complete. This reprint was done in a limited number of copies, on fine quality paper and well bound. EUR 400

(GERY, A.G. Modern boards. Charléty, i, 2665. First and only edition. The 'émeute populaire' about which is spoken, seems to have been provoked by the rumour that doctors were looking for children to dissect after killing them first. The sermon was preached the Sunday following the riots and the preacher rejects the notion that the hospital could indulge in such horrid practices and points to the fact that the poor, who were the rioters, are treated gratis by the hospital and the doctors. (HOLBACH, P.H.D.TH. D'.) Système social, ou principes naturels de la morale et de la politique. Avec un examen de l'influence du gouvernement sur les moeurs. Par l'auteur du 'Système de la nature'. Londres (Amsterdam, M.M. Rey), 1774. 3 volumes. (4), 210 pp.; 176 pp.; 167, (1) pp. 8vo. Contemporary calf, spines richly gilt with green leather labels and gilt lettering, gilt triple fillets on sides, some minor defects and imperfections, but a nice copy. Vercruysse 1774-A6; Naville 419; Thomas, Checklist, 78. The work was severely prosecuted by the authorities and as late as 1823 a bookseller was punished for having brought another edition on the market. Paul-Henri Dietrich Thiery d'Holbach (1723-1789), the formemost exponent of atheistic materialism and the most intransigent polemicist against religion in the Enlightenment. On settling in Paris, Holbach had associated with the younger philosophes who, with Diderot, d'Alembert and Rousseau, were grouping around the Encyclopédie, to which he also became a major contributor. His Salon soon became the main social center, and a sort of intellectual headquarters, for the Encyclopedist movement. Among those attending were Diderot, Grimm, Helvétius, d'Alembert, Rousseau, Boulanger, Condillac, Naigeon, Turgot, and Condorcet. The Baron also counted among his acquaintances many foreigners, notably Hume, Gibbon, Smith, Priestley, Walpole, Garrick, Sterne, Beccaria and Franklin. It is little surprizing that Holbach was also known as le premier maître d'hôtel de la philosophie. Almost everything he wrote -whether because it expounded atheism and materialism, attacked Christianity, or castigated absolute monarchy, the state church, and feudal privilege- was highly subversive under the Ancien régime and could have exposed him to the severst penalties. Consequently, his innumerable manuscripts were usually forwarded through secret channels to Holland for publication, after which the books were smuggled back into France. - Pages 123-160 (vol. 1) with a small wornhole in the outer blank margin. (HOLBACH, P.H.D.TH. D'.) Système de la nature. Ou des loix du monde physique & du monde moral. Par M. Mirabaud. Sécretaire perpétuel, et l'un des quarante de l'Académie Françoise. Londres (Amsterdam, M.M. Rey), 1770. 2 volumes. (12), 366 pp.; (6), 408 pp. 8vo. Contemporary marbled calf, spine gilt in compartments, gilt triple fillet on sides, green labels with gilt lettering. Printing and the Mind of Man, 215; Vercruysse 1770-A7; Naville 417; Thomas, Checklist, 78; Kress 6737; Goldsmiths 10607; INED 2289; Higgs 5120; Peignot, ii, 181-184; not in Einaudi. Second issue of the first edition, with the errata corrected. This is Holbach's most famous work (and in which he was very likely assisted by Diderot) and expounds a complete theorie of materialism.Holbach contributed some four hundred articles to the Encyclopédie of his lifelong friend and colleague Denis Diderot. Diderot, d'Alembert, Helvetius, Voltaire and others of the philosophes met frequently for dinner and philosophical discussion at the Baron's house, which became known as 'the café of Europe' (among foreign visitors were Wilkes, Hume and Sterne). In the Système Holbach rejected the Cartesian mind-body dualism and attempted to explain all phenomena, physical and mental, in terms of matter in motion. Holbach rejected religion because he saw it as a wholly harmful influence, and he tried to supply a desirable alternative. In fact he outlined a whole ethical and political philosophy, which he expanded in his later works. Holbach may not have been a great original thinker (his important ideas can already be found in predecessors such as Hobbes, Locke and La Mettrie), but by combining various elements in their thought and pressing it to the logical conclusion he reached the most extreme position in eighteenth-century free-thought. In fact, the present book caused a rift in the ranks of the philosophes, dividing them between deists and atheists, and even provoked Voltaire to reply in defense of religion. EUR 1100

CONDORCET, (J.M.A.N. DE CARITAT DE.) Esquisse d'un tableau historique des progrès de l'esprit humain. Ouvrage posthume de Condorcet. Seconde édition. A Paris, Chez Agasse, l'an III (1795). (iv), v-viii, 389, (1) pp. 8vo. 19th-century half calf, marbled boards, gilt lettering to spine, lightly rubbed. Cf.: Printing and the Mind of Man 246; En Français dans le Texte 196; Robinet 382; INED 1184; Martin & Walter, 8083. Identical with the first edition, but re-set. We have not been able to trace a record of this edition in any of the reference works consulted. Considered to be Condorcet's most original and most important work. In it he divided history into ten epochs, the first nine dealing with history upto the time in which he himself lived, whereas the tenth is his prophetic view of the future. It is the most original part of the book in which Condorcet forecasts among others the future moral, intellectual and physical improvement of man. '..... it is with the Sketch itself that Condorcet's name and influence have been chiefly associated, and it is with that work -often regarded as the philosophical statement of the eighteenth century- that Condorcet bequeathed to the nineteenth century the fundamental idiom of its social thought, the idea of progress ..... The Sketch not only demonstrated the power of the social art but also made clear that it could succeed only as a communal and democratic art. It is this emphasis upon the collective experience and achievements of mankind, this concern with the 'most obscure and neglected chapter of the of history of the human race', namely rhe progress of the mass of the people in society, that links Condorcet's view of history with the conception of social science' (Encyclopedia of Philosophy). ENGELS, F. l'Origine de la famille, de la propriété privée et de l'état (pour faire suite aux travaux de Lewis H. Morgan.) Traduction française par Henri Ravé. Paris, Georges Carré, 1893. (2), xxxiii, (1, blank), 290, (1) pp. Small 8vo. Contemporary half cloth, marbled sides. Rubel, p. 252, 93. First French edition. Marx had studied very thoroughly Morgan's work before he died, and Engels, himself an expert in the field of agrarian societies and primitive societies, wrote this work in which he based himself on Marx's notes, Morgan's pioneer work and his own historical knowledge and insights. He based himself more on Morgan than Marx did who thought of Morgan as no more than one specialist among the many, while Engels, however, considered Morgan to be an important author. According to Engels, Morgan had discovered in America the materialistic conception of history as Marx had done 40 years earlier in Europe. He also felt that Morgan's antropological discoveries were of great importance. In this work Engels studied the origins of the family, the changing role of women and the growing importance of the State as an instrument of the exploiting class. The most striking feature of the book is its real and important contribution to the study of the emancipation of women (See: David McLellan, Friedrich Engels). - Name written on title. The revised and enlarged edition of Sur l'homme et le développement de ses facultés (1835) with much new material. This is the edition generally referred to. Quetelet was the first to promote the study of human statistics in France. Adolphe Quetelet (1796-1874), Belgian astronomer and statistician. He received instruction from Laplace in the theory of probability while he was in Paris to study the methods of practical astronomy. Quetelet's influence on statistics came first of all from his practical work in census taking, the practical rules developed by him still forming the basis of modern census work. In addition he was largely responsible for the extension of statistical study from such physical facts as population, economic resources and the like to the wide field of 'moral statistics', which includes the whole realm of acts determined by moral or psychological factors. In the field of theory Quetelet is known above all for his conception of the homme moyen or average man, a conception which in its positive contribution represents the application of the Gaussian normal law of error to the analysis of distributions of data on human characteristics. As a pioneering conception, however, Quetelet's doctrine was inevitably couched in metaphysical terms-as a theory of social determination through a hypostatized abstraction. EUR 1250

THOMAS PAINE - GREIS, JOHN Republik oder Monarchie? Beantwortet durch Thomas Paine's 'Gesunder Menschenverstand' und 'Menschenrechte'. Nach den Originalquellen bearbeitet von John Greis. Hamburg, Hoffmann und Campe, 1848. viii, 119, (1) pp. Small 8vo. Contemporary half calf, corners, marbled boards, gilt stamped title on spine (slightly rubbed). Not in Stephans, Gimbel Paine Collection. Rare first edition. The preface (dated New York, October 1847) of this work consists almost entirely of a citation by Paine, where he states his critical position towards monarchy: ' ... der ganzen Hölle der Monarchie habe ich den Krieg erklärt.' The first chapter is a compilation of texts from the two most important works by Paine. The second chapter is entitled 'Aphorismen', and the subsections are headed: 'Die Amerikanische Revolution', 'Die Einheit des Menschen', 'Kirche und Staat', 'Religion', 'Sclaverei', 'Credit und Geld', 'Stimmrecht' a.o. The selection is made from several works by Paine. Pp. 103-119 contain a short biography: 'Biographie Thomas Paine's'. On the author or his work hardly any information could be found. He seems to have published in the same year a guide for German emigrants to North-America. The year of publication is remarkable. Whereas the French revolution had only affected the cultural elite in Germany, truly political revolutionary events happened all over Germany in March 1848. The king of Prussia Friedrich Wilhelm IV was forced by the revolts to establish a sort of parlement, a liberal democratic government and a constitution, assets that were annihilated in November 1848 by the King in a counter-revolution. Paine's statements like: 'Jeder mann hat ein Recht auf eine Stimme und keiner auf mehr... und wer ist er der einen andern ausschliessen möchte?' could have had at least as great a revolutionary alloy in Germany in these days as they had had in Paine's lifetime. But we could not trace any information on the role of this work in history, nor could it be found in the usual bibliographies. Though the work does not appear in Stephans, Gimbel Paine Collection it is present in the library of the American Philosophical Society. EUR 750

When the manufacturers of Mulhouse took the initiative in calling public attention to the child labor prevalent in the silk mills, the Académie des Sciences Morales et Politiques invited Villermé to an investigation of the conditions.
